Love the variegated effect of the threads. It gives a subtle mottled look that is not overpowering the strips of colour. This will be a lovely rug to cuddle under with a good book.
Yes, that variegated effect is certainly interesting. Just 2 threads together-

Sometimes simple is the best but it doesn't look all that simple to me.

If there were a "modern" knitting movement, I think this would qualify! Great looking afghan.
