Straight From the Heart
Week 7
The Dresden Plate block is progressing.
My monogram is centered on it and the French Knots surrounding the middle are now complete.
I have to admit, before I go any further, that I did not personally stitch this Dresden Plate block. My mother did.
It was one of the first "lessons" that I taught her when I was doing the 2 yr City & Guilds Patchwork & Quilting course.
As a professional seamstress she was always making clothing and garments, but had never ventured into quilting. When she saw the fun things I was learning on my course she was very eager to learn what she could about this new style of stitching.
The fabrics used on this piece are all recycled from dresses,skirts, and tops that were either my mothers, mine or my daughters.
This quilt of many memories is for me.
The seams of the Dresden Plate will be embellished with stitches in the crazy patchwork style.

This will be a stunning piece, Cy! The fact the materials came from you, your mother and sister, and that your mother created the block makes it more precious! Do you still like french knots? That's quite the pile you made!

I love the rainbow of colors. It's especially sweet that you are using a piece of your mother's, am anxious to see those seam treatments.
Ohmigosh! You have to be the French knot queen! Are those triple wrapped? Love the color changes, and the whole block. This will be even more beautiful embellished, but it could stand as done right now.

Haha. Thanks Deborah but there are 'a few' flaws in there, but not enough to warrant any fixing lol.
Thanks Suz. One of these fabrics is from a baby dress that mum made for my daughter over 30 years ago. I had no idea that she kept the fabric scraps.
Another fabric is from the blouse of her sister (my aunt Doris) who we all adored.
Yes I still love French knots. Because I used a variety of thread thicknesses I have wrapped 1, 2, 3, & 4 times.

Yeah I thought it was a pretty cool thing to do too. Watch this space for more 'things' from the past. The title of the quilt " Straight From The Heart" has actually given me inspiration in a completely different way than I had originally planned with just using heart shape designs.
Thank you Fitzy. I am back-tracking on the seam treatments. I've decided not to stitch on them now. I want the fabrics to have all the glory on this bit of the quilt.
FK Queen rofl. Thanks for your suggestion that this block could "stand as done right now". I got to thinking that it would be good to keep the main part of the fabrics clear of embellishing to let mums fabrics have the limelight here.
This is why I love this group so much. Just a simple suggestion like that helps me see "the light".
Thank you Angela. I've decided to utilize a few more orphaned pieces in this quilt. It will be great to have all my memorable pieces in one place.
Thank Goodness! I could see you cutting some "unworkable" UFOs up and using them as parts too. While I love the heart motif, I think this new morphed idea will be so much more heartfelt.
