My February block :
It began as a happy block
I added a tag from 1977 when I was an active member and part of the executive of the Alliston Tennis Club
A red mother-of-pearl button surrounded by bead weaving, and then by fancy picot tatting
in the circle of the tatting is an earring given me by my hubby. Gold, with a small diamond chip, it sits upon a silver sequin for extra sparkle. I don't know what happened to the other earring.....
For some reason, February's block was easy to work on, and the ideas flowed. Perhaps because it's Valentine's month, I went with a red and white theme. It's also the month my father was born.
Here's my progress so far:
You can see I added herrigbone stitch to my CQJP to couch down a red velvet ribbon.

Your block is coming along nicely. Your personal tatting is a nice addition. I really like it when things go smoothly and fall into place naturally. I like your Herringbone samples. They are spaced so evenly and the color combination works great with this stitch.
Thanks so much, Connie! I wanted a meandering path to separate the red material from the burgundy and gold. I think it did the trick!
I used a ruler to make the rows for the herringbone--I have a tendency to crowd things otherwise and slant.
What do you have planned for the end of the green braid? Some kind of bobble or trinket?

Wow, what a difference between your last block and this one. This one is starting out bold and beautiful. Thanks for sharing the picot tatting, fits well on your block. Glad to see the flow mojo going for you.
I recently bought myself a tatting shuttle with the idea to learn how to tat. I might get around to it eventually, lol.
Yours is really nice Suz, I'll have to look out for that tat stitch to learn.

Thanks Debra. I've been auditioning a few different bits for that spot, but I haven't decided yet. I may make another beaded bead for it, or go with some tatting,......
It was a surprise how I just began with a pre-made tat, and it just flowed from there. I'm quite pleased with it. Hope the mojo sticks with me ;-D
Cy I needle tat, and most tatters I know of don't really use that stitch the same way I do......so I don't know how easy it is to do on a shuttle.

I like the way you couched down the ribbon and then embellished the stitching! Your white tatting makes me think of frosting or whipped cream...very pretty. Also enjoyed looking at all your stitch variations~the double herringbone is so pretty in 2 colors!
Well I've never heard of needle tatting, so that's something new I've learnt today, lol. I shall have to Google that one.
And it's still a happy block! I never knew one could tat things like that. I thought it was just the little stitchy-picot things that make hearts and angels and lace. =) You have educated me! The hearts across that one seam are a nice combination.

I understand, from tatters who do both, that needle tatting is easier to learn than shuttle tatting, and since you already crochet (and knit?) it should be fairly easy to pick up. Needle tatting appears a bit coarser than shuttle tatting. If you want more info, drop me a line and I'll share.
Well, Susan, for years I thought that tatting was just rings and chains, but in 2010 I found The Online Tatting Class, which is free, offers classes to different levels of tatting, and a pile of free patterns. There, I learned so much, and fell in love with the fancy picot stitch. I must admit I use it a lot.
I've been saving those heart buttons for a long time, just waiting for the perfect spot.
Your block is great and the tatting a real plus! Love the herringbone variations, Suz!
