My goal for TAST this year is to develop
sets of complex looking bands that can be stitched with basic stitches. Toward that end, my seam treatment this week features a herringbone stitch as the structure of the band with the fly stitch added in the valleys of the herringbone stitch. The cross stitch fabric band was couched down with small fan stitches. Later, when it's time for the embellishments, I'll add beads in the fly stitch's belly & the fan points.
I decided this was a good project in which to use my specialty threads. The cross stitch band is from a huge stash that a friend gave me. I think these were originally used in the '80s & '90s for decorating towels. I think the bands will help convey the folk feeling I want for my Christmas wallhanging.
This seam treatment is 3 vertical rows of Fly Stitch overlapped. It's pretty bare right now but will be dressed up with beads later. As I was stitching, I decided the neighboring fabric will be perfect for small star sequins. I'll just place them over the printed stars!

I like the band too, Jen. I have a big shoebox full of these packages and they have different colors of edging. I plan to use them alot! It's great having the Aida as a guide too. I don't want to work that hard! *wink*

Nice work, Debra. I really like the way you overlapped the stitches. What did you think of the counted thread base? I used that on my "doodle cloth" and felt a bit inhibited, but discovered a fun way to flip the stitches. It'll be interesting to see what these look like embellished...pretty, I'm sure!
I'll admit, I liked the Aida. It pulled me right back to my fond memories of counted cross stitch days. Rather than stress over spacing and sizing, I could make a decision and stitch. I was at the point of the week when that was important!
Lovely band Debra. I like the inclusion of the gold thread for herringbone stitch, and the combination of gold and red for the fly stitch. A very pleasing combination altogether.
I totally had the same idea about star shaped sequins on the neighboring fabric.
Gosh, I wish I could get ahold of some of that cross-stitch banding! Brilliant! Maybe I'll just have to make my own by binding or overcasting the edges of a thin strip of Aida. Hmm. Gears are turning now!

I love the band idea! I wonder if any of those are still available for purchase somewhere. I don't think on this project, but I have another project where I think I'd love to put them! I can picture the design with the beads and the threads are so sparkly-Christmas. The 3-part seam is great! I'm glad I didn't look here before I did my sampler piece, I'd have been unable to think of something else!
Your seam work is awesome, I love the layered look your putting on them and your color choices are popping it right up, especially the gold. I'm with you on holding off the beads till end, snaggly little boogers aren'y they?
